Katherine Scheele | Cropping Your Images

This post is to explain the cropping of images for print {and then to ideally become framed}. It’s all explained by math and aspect ratios and things I don’t feel like getting into, but basically your photos will need to be cropped in some way if you were to choose to print them any size besides the first photo displayed below.

During my workflow your images are cropped to 5x7 for two reasons. First, this size is the most popular and widely ordered. Second, the 5x7 format crops images into a long and narrow frame so cropping into a more square (8x10, 11x14 or so forth) is more accommodating and image loss is minimal. If you order the Gallery CD, your images are sized as 5x7 and I tend to leave plenty of "crop" room for you to print your pictures at any size with minimal image loss as demonstrated above. If you change the crop of the 5x7 to another size, the overall composition of the picture will change a bit too.

These images are to help illustrate my point and to help you understand what I’m talking about. They are the most common ratios and how each one will look different, depending on that ratio.
